Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has reportedly launched a wave of layoffs which is expected to impact 10% of the company’s workforce: an estimated 8,000 people.

The cuts started Wednesday will occur in three waves, reported Reuters.

The affected teams include Meta’s integrity team, which is responsible for removing malicious and hateful content, cybersecurity team, and content design division, the Business Insider reported.

Workers based in the US will receive severance pay of upto 16 weeks, in addition to an extra two weeks for every year they have been employed at the company, Meta representatives told Al Jazeera.

The company would also cancel plan to hire 6,000 people and is expected to shift 7,000 employees into artificial intelligence related roles.
