Pakistan cyber agency sets up special units to counter ‘fake news’

It was reported on October 4, 2026 that National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has established dedicated units to counter what it described as ‘fake news’ and ‘anti-state propaganda’.

In a statement, the NCCIA spokesperson said these special units have been activated across all regions to monitor the country’s cyberspace, adding that all resources would be utilized to provide swift justice to citizens.

“There is a zero-tolerance policy against fake news and anti-state propaganda,” NCCIA Director General Ali Nasir Rizvi said, directing more citizen-friendly complaint and verification systems.

In a press conference on October 22, 2026 NCCIA warned social media users against anti-state posts, messages, and online harassment which are being actively monitored by its cyber patrolling unit.

“You are not clicking alone,” Additional Director of the NCCIA Atif Ameer recently said during a press briefing. Atif said the agency had three main priorities under a clear message from its Director General: call centre operations, anti-state content, and online harassment.

The official said anti-state tweets and messages would not be tolerated and warned that the agency was actively monitoring social media platforms to identify such content.

He said the NCCIA’s cyber patrolling unit was conducting surveillance across different social media apps and that those found posting anti-state material could face action.

The official also warned users against harassing people online, targeting women, or publishing defamatory content about others on Facebook and other social media platforms.

He said these three areas were the agency’s key priorities, stressing that social media users could not use online platforms to violate other people’s dignity or harass them.
