A Texas couple is suing OpenAI after their son died of an overdose in 2025 after using the company’s chatbot ChatGPT to get information about drugs.
The suit has been filed in the California state court by Leila Turner-Scott and her husband, Angus Scott. They have said that their son Sam Nelson, 19, died of an overdose after the AI platform advised him to use drugs.
The chatbot advised the teenager that it was safe to take kratom, a supplement used in drinks, in combination with Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication.
The mother is reportedly to have told CBS News that she was aware of her son using ChatGPT for his homework but didn’t know that he was using it to gain more information about drugs.
The parents hold the company responsible for the death of their son and alleged that it “bypassed safety guards”.
