OpenAI has reportedly discontinued its AI video app Sora, a platform that gained rapid popularity for generating short videos using artificial intelligence, amid growing concerns over deepfakes and misuse.
The company announced it was “saying goodbye” to the app and would provide further details on how users can preserve their content.o
Sora had gone viral after its launch, allowing users to create highly realistic videos from simple prompts. However, the same technology raised alarm among experts and advocacy groups, who warned that it could be used to produce misleading or non-consensual deepfake content featuring public figures.
The shutdown emerges as the company is reportedly moving away from experimental consumer apps like Sora to focus on more commercially viable areas such as enterprise tools, coding technologies, and core AI products.
Analysts say the abrupt decision highlights both the ethical challenges of generative video technology and the difficulty of sustaining user trust and long-term engagement in AI-driven platforms
