Meta to shutdown its VR metaverse in June 2026

EU: Meta should offer users free option without targeted ads, says watchdog

Meta is shutting down the virtual reality version of its social platform, Horizon Worlds, on its Quest headsets, marking a major retreat from its earlier metaverse ambitions.

The app will be removed from the Quest Store starting March 31, 2026, and the full VR experience will end by June 15. After that, Horizon Worlds will continue only as a mobile platform rather than a VR one.

This decision reflects a broader shift in Meta’s strategy. The company is moving away from heavy investment in VR-based social spaces and focusing more on areas like artificial intelligence and other technologies. The change also follows layoffs in its Reality Labs division, which has been responsible for metaverse development.

Despite billions of dollars spent and high expectations, Horizon Worlds never gained widespread popularity. It struggled with technical issues and limited user engagement, especially compared to competing platforms. Critics also pointed out design shortcomings and a lack of strong appeal beyond a niche audience.

Although Meta is ending the VR version, it says it still believes in virtual reality and plans to continue developing new headsets. However, the shutdown signals a clear shift away from its earlier vision of building a fully immersive metaverse through Horizon Worlds.
