PTA blocks movie streaming website Best Netflix Movie along with over 400 links over controversial film

Islamabad, 27th January, 2021: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked the website named “Best Netflix Movie” for viewership in Pakistan. The Authority submitted a report in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on January 26 explaining that multiple complaints were being received of Netflix airing the trailer of a movie reported to contain blasphemous content. After some investigation, it was learned that the movie was in fact available on the website named “Best Netflix Movie”.

PTA went on to tell the Court that on 4th January, the website was served notices demanding the blasphemous and controversial movie to be removed but it remained accessible, after which the site was blocked. Other than this, the trailer for this film was discovered on 778 other websites out of which 452 were blocked.

The PTA also cited content-removal power granted under section 37 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 that allows the Authority to remove content based on given qualifiers.
