Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) has announced the second edition of the Sahafi Summit, which is set to take place from November 21-23, 2024, in Lahore.

The conference, facilitated by MMfD, is being organised in collaboration with the Association of Media and Communication Academic Professionals (AMCAP) and the Beaconhouse National University (BNU).

The event will bring together journalists, editors, digital rights advocates, tech and media sustainability experts, and students. The three-day summit comprises panel discussions, workshops, power talks, tech demonstrations, lightning talks, and various capacity building sessions.

The overarching theme for Sahafi Summit 2024 is “Youth Leadership for a Resilient Media Ecosystem”. The call for proposals for breakout sessions is now open. Submission can be made under the following sub-themes:

Erosion of the Information Ecosystem: This sub-theme focuses on strategies to counter misinformation and rebuild trust in journalism. Participants will discuss how young media professionals can take a leading role in re-establishing credibility and promoting ethical journalism.

Media and Digital Freedoms: Discussions under this sub-theme will centre on how journalists can navigate threats persisting from censorship and manipulation, and advocate for freedom while adapting to the complexities of the digital age.

Traditional and Digital Media Economy: This sub-theme will examine how media organisations can innovate to remain financially viable while maintaining editorial independence against Big Tech companies dominating the digital advertising space. Solutions will be explored around new revenue models and collaborations.

Proposals on other pressing issues facing the media industry can be submitted, too.

Interested participants can submit their proposals on the official website of the Sahafi Summit. The deadline for submission is October 30, 2024.

All proposals will be independently reviewed by the Organising Committee, and participants with approved proposals will be contacted by November 10, 2024. Due to limited slots, only the most relevant sessions will be selected.
