Notices issued to Ministry of Law and PTA in fifth case filed against social media rules in IHC

Islamabad, 26th January, 2020: The Islamabad High Court issued notices to the Ministry of Law and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in another case filed against the social media rules, notified earlier in November, 2020.

The petition was filed by journalist Tanzila Mazhar on Saturday, challenging the legality of the Rules by arguing that they go beyond the remit prescribed in the parent act, i.e., the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016.

Four other similar petitions were heard by the Chief Justice on Monday, where the Attorney General also made an appearance before the Court to reassure all parties that a meaningful consultation process will be conducted with the Government with regards to the rules, and a report of such will be presented to the Court on the 26th February, 2020.

Ms. Mazhar’s case was clubbed with the rest of the pending petitions on the rules and was adjourned until the 26th of February.
