The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a service called Ijazat Aap Ki, which it says will enable people to protect their personal data.

The Ijazat service will help restrict unauthorised access to sensitive data by making it mandatory to obtain an individual’s consent for the verification of their identity card, according to NADRA.

“Your data is your personal property, and just like your physical property, citizens are from now onwards empowered to control access and protect against misuse or unwarranted use,” said NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik. He added that the service will give people “complete authority” to decide whether they want to share their private data.

The initiative will require service providers such as banks to obtain an individual’s permission to use their personal information through a 6-digit passcode sent to their mobile number registered with NADRA. The pin number provided to NADRA will indicate an individual’s consent for the verification process.

The mobile number can be registered with NADRA by sending the 13-digit ID card number to 8009. The sender will receive a confirmation message upon the successful completion of their enrollment.

The Ijazat service was rolled out on March 2, 2023 for all verification transactions.
