Twitter has launched an internal review after an employee deactivated Donald Trump’s account on his last day at the company.
The US president’s Twitter feed mysteriously went offline for 11 minutes on Thursday, triggering feverish speculation that his account had been suspended.
Instead of seeing the usual rants and declarations, users were confronted by a different message: “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!”.
The social media company said the account “was inadvertently deactivated due to human error by a Twitter employee”.
“The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored. We are continuing to investigate and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.”
After investigating the outage, it said: “We have learned that this was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day. We are conducting a full internal review.”
