The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the Ministry of Interior to revoke its letter directing the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ban X. The social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, was blocked in Pakistan in February.
The interior ministry had issued the letter to the telecom regulator on February 17, 2024, a week after the general elections were held in Pakistan. X has since largely been inaccessible in the country.
The SHC ordered the ministry to rescind the letter in a hearing today (Wednesday). The court has clubbed together multiple petitions filed against the suspension of X.
The ministry has been given one week to revoke its letter. If it fails to comply, the court will take action itself, it remarked.
In the previous hearing, the interior ministry claimed that X was blocked because the content being uploaded to the platform was threatening national security. The claimed threats were not specified, however.
The X ban has also been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Peshawar High Court (PHC).
