A Complete Timeline of the Controversial Social Media Rules

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) notified the highly criticised Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Oversight, Procedure and Safeguards) Rules, 2021 on October 16, 2021. The Rules, which are commonly referred to as the Social Media Rules, have followed a controversial process that civil society has termed “undemocratic”.

The Digital Rights Monitor has compiled a detailed timeline of the key developments in the process of the invocation of the rules to govern social media.
