November 29, 2018

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani corporations lack transparency on how they handle consumer data. This was revealed in a study conducted by Media Matters for Democracy on the privacy policies of corporations.

The research explored the extent to which privacy policies of corporations are easily accessible and transparent about handling of consumer data.

Privacy policies of eight entities were reviewed for this research including Telenor, Jazz, Ufone, Zong, Careem, Daraz.pk, Pak Wheels and Zameen.com.

The study found out that while the privacy policies of majority of them was easily accessible on their respective websites; only one entity had its privacy policies translated in Urdu language.

Also, majority of the corporations studied for this research did not specify the third parties with whom they shared consumer data.

The study also found out that majority did not specify their data retention period.

The research also found out that the privacy policies of Zong were apparently a word by word copy of Telenor.

The research can be read here.
